Extra! Extra! Your seven safety stories and scenes…

By Matt King

Did you ever see the first sequel to that dog movie, Beethoven? Spoiler alert: Basically, it’s about the same family and dog, but they go on a camping trip, driving into the forests of America to bond as a family. Hilarity then ensues, and it then ends the same way the first one ends, with the family realizing how important the dog is. Different journey, same end point.

This week, we’re taking a slightly different route than our usual six stories to get to the same destination: a safer you. Ahead, you’ll see some stories about what’s happening in the world, safety-wise, but also you’ll hear some tips and get some links to some pretty rad videos. Without further ado, your seven safety stories and scenes…

  • Monday night fever… A safety training website gives some tips on how to prevent the spread of contagious diseases in the workplace.
  • Health and Safety: Outback Style… Australian businesses and organizations are preparing themselves for the upcoming introduction of nationally consistent health and safety laws.
  • Mi casa es su casa… We mentioned this on our Facebook page, but here’s a little reminder: the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA) has put together a farm safety plan to avoid injuries.
  • There’s pylons dancing in the streets… North Carolina’s Work Zone Safety Program gives out some statistics (did you know that there were 2,125 work zone accidents in North Carolina in 2009?), but also gives some useful driving tips.
  • Keeping an eye on the backseat… A recent survey revealed that Scottish cab drivers feel unsafe in their taxis. The Edinburgh City Council is now exploring the possibility of installing CCTV in each cab.
  • Being cautious with hidden hazards… WCB-Nova Scotia has just released 5 new commercials featuring likely workplace hazards. You can find them here, here, here, here and here. They also have a new Rod Stickman video for you.
  • In memoriam… A 24-year-old man died on the job in southeast Calgary after a semi trailer backed into him. The man died at the scene of the accident.

Remember, work safe, work smart, and have an excellent weekend!
