It’s Your Job Video Contest

By Brenna Hill

Last week the Honourable Lisa Raitt, Canada’s Labour Minister, announced the winners of the national video contest “It’s your job”. The goal of the competition was to create a video that could be used for social media, to inform young workers about workplace safety, and their employment rights.  The contestants did a great job of getting out the important messages and representing their regions!

How it worked

First, all of the contestants’ submitted videos to their provincial contest, then the winners from each province were entered into the national competition. There were two different categories that people could enter into: people who were between the ages of 18 and 24, and people who are enrolled in secondary school (which is high school where I come from). Each category had its own set of winners with first place receiving $2000, second place-$1500, third place-$1000 and the fan favorites also receiving $1000. In the secondary school category, the winner’s school also received the equivalent prize amount.

The winners were selected by a celebrity panel which included Jim Caruk, the host of HGTV’s House Hunters International, Mag Ruffman, who played Anne in the TV movie Anne of Green Gables, and Alan Doyle, lead singer of Great Big Sea. The fan favorites were determined by the amount of likes it received from Canadian voters on YouTube.

The winner for the secondary schools category:

The two first place winners have been entered into an international workplace video contest in Germany, to represent Canada, in 2014!

The winner for the 18-24 year olds category:

Congratulations to all of the winners at the provincial and national level!
