Your January safety in the news

By Theresa Trant

A workplace death, dramatic rescue and safety fines—here is your January Safety in the News.

Workplace death

A 22-year-old man died Dec. 28 while repairing a tire on a piece of heavy equipment north of Fort McMurray. The tire flew off the rim and a ring from the tire assembly struck the worker. A stop work order was issued and Occupational Health and Safety officials are investigating the incident.

Dramatic rescue

On Dec. 17 a crane operator in Kingston, ON became the centre of a dramatic rescue after being stranded when a fire broke out at an apartment building under construction. A military helicopter was used to airlift him off the crane. Fortunately, the crane operator suffered only minor injuries.

Safety taken seriously

Fall protection fell short for four businesses, resulting in fines. The first business was fined $1,880 in Saskatchewan provincial court in December. The company failed to ensure workers were using fall protection at the workplace. The other three businesses were each fined $840 for also failing to ensure workers used fall protection at the workplace.

Alberta Occupational Health & Safety officers can now write tickets on the spot when they see unsafe working conditions. Workers can be fined between $100 and $200, while employers could see fines between $300 and $500.
