New year, safe new beginnings?

By Melissa Babcock

New Year 2015 formed from sparking digits over black background

People often look at the dawn of a new year as a chance to wipe the slate clean and start fresh.

Whether it’s deciding to spend more time with loved ones, to live a healthier lifestyle or to save money for that exotic trip you’ve always wanted, there is no time like the beginning of a new year to make some new resolutions. So if you haven’t given much thought to workplace safety in the past, perhaps this is a good time to rectify that. Or maybe you’re already safety-minded – if so, the new year is the perfect opportunity to reflect on the importance of safety.

Whether you’re in management or a new, young worker just starting out, it’s important to always keep workplace safety front-of-mind and the new year is the perfect time to ensure you’re doing just that. Here are two small, but significant reminders to help you start 2015 off on the right (safe) foot:

  • Know your rights – and responsibilities. Every employee plays a key role in ensuring a safe workplace and preventing workplace injuries. Familiarize yourself with your company’s safety regulations and policies while remaining vigilant and aware of any potential violations and hazards. And of course, if you spot any hazards, report them immediately so they can be dealt with.
  • Respect and follow safety regulations. Whenever possible, try to set a good example for your fellow employees (or if you’re a supervisor or manager, for your team members). Wear PPE on the job when required. Obey all safety signage around your work site. Follow your organization’s instructions with regard to safety and don’t be afraid to ask questions when you’re unsure.

The Government of Canada’s Labour Program is a great resource for finding out more about an employee’s role under our country’s labour code when it comes to workplace safety. Taking the time to re-evaluate your attitude towards safety can help ensure the new year is a safe one for everyone – an important resolution for all!
