Safety in the News

By Angela Unsworth

I went to the mountains a few weeks ago to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, and upon my return had the misfortune to drive past the investigation scene of the gas-and-dash that took place on June 7. Later, as I read the recent news stories, I learned of the heartbreaking details of what I had witnessed. I’m honoured to be able to write about these events and share the details of heroism and courage of these workers who died as a result of work.

Here are the recent Safety in the News stories:

Workplace tragedies:

Two tragic workplace fatalities last week sent our province into mourning.

The Edmonton Police Service loses a member – Constable Daniel Woodall, an Edmonton Police Service officer, was one of two officers shot in the line of duty while attempting to serve a warrant on June 8. Sadly, he passed away from his injuries. The second officer, Sergeant Jason Harley, was treated by emergency paramedics and is expected to recover.

Gas-and-dash ends tragically – Maryam Rashidi, a gas station attendant, was struck by a truck she stood in front of in an attempt to stop a gas-and-dash on June 7. She succumbed to her injuries in hospital.

Our hearts and thoughts go out to the friends and families of everyone impacted by these awful events.

Focusing on safety rather than haste:

Delay caused by workplace safety concerns – Work was delayed on the demolition of the historic Mayfair Hotel in Kitchener, Ontario, due to significant safety hazards on site. The delay allowed the contractor to address the hazards so work could resume safely.
