What is love – a song for work safety?

By Angela Unsworth

Valentine’s Day is coming up!

Looking over past blog posts during this momentous time in our lives, a song (What is love by Haddaway) in a previous post by Matt, Love and the workplace, inspired me to write this for you today.

You might wonder what this song could possibly have to do with young worker safety…well the Heads Up campaign team has taught me that anything can be turned into a conversation about work safety!

I put the song on repeat, danced in my office cubicle and wrote this post, just for you!

While looking at the lyrics for the song—what is love, baby don’t hurt me, don’t hurt me, no more—I thought about the fact that we might absolutely love our jobs, but sometimes they hurt us if we’re not careful.

All’s fair in love and work…

 “I don’t know why you’re not fair
I give you my love, but you don’t care
So what is right and what is wrong?
Gimme a sign.”

It’s only fair that you know what your rights are in the workplace.  For example, did you know that you can refuse dangerous work? Sometimes when you start a new job, or even if you’ve been at one for a while, you might not know your rights. Learning your rights in the workplace should be part of your training.

“Oh, I don’t know, what can I do?
What else can I say, it’s up to you.”

I’ll tell you what you can do if your rights weren’t covered in training, or if you were overwhelmed by so much information you either missed it or forgot! You can check out the Government of Alberta’s website for workers for your rights and responsibilities.

“(Woah-woah-woah, oh, oh)
(Woah-woah-woah, oh, oh)

What is love?
Baby don’t hurt me
Don’t hurt me
No more.”

Now, every time you hear this song, you’ll think about safety! I know I will. On the upcoming Valentine’s Day (and every other day), show yourself some love—research your rights in the workplace to make sure that you Work smart. Work safe.
